
Panthers Drop 69-55 Decision at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE – Despite another stellar performance from redshirt sophomore guard Mikayla Johnson, the Pitt women's basketball team fell to Florida State, 69-55, Thursday evening at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
Pitt (11-17, 3-12 ACC) was paced by Johnson as she logged 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field – including a 4-of-7 mark from 3-point range. Johnson has now scored 15+ points in each of the last three games.
Johnson was joined in double figures by graduate center Khadija Faye, who logged her ACC-leading 14th double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
As a unit, the Panthers forced Florida State (21-6, 11-4 ACC) into a season-high 20 turnovers, but were unable to overcome shooting 28.8 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Junior guard Marley Washenitz continued her solid play defensively this season – logging four steals, marking her 17th game this season registering 2+ steals.
How It Happened
Pitt and Florida State both came out strong defensively as each team recorded just one made field goal over the first five minutes of action. After a Miles layup gave the Panthers a 5-4 lead at the 4:36 mark, the two teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the frame. The contest was tied at 12 after 10 minutes of action.
The Panthers opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 19-14 lead just two minutes into the period. Florida State then responded with 14 unanswered. Pitt closed the first half on a 7-0 spurt and trailed, 28-26, at the halftime break.
Individually, Faye led Pitt in the first half with nine points and six boards.
Pitt started the third quarter with a pair of layups from Johnson and Faye to regain the lead at 30-28. The two teams traded baskets for the following two minutes, before Florida State went on a 10-2 burst, going up seven with 2:20 left in the third period.
Faye opened the fourth quarter with a layup but a four minute and nine second Pitt scoring drought ensued as the Panthers trailed by 12 with just under five minutes remaining in the contest. Pitt continued to battle down the stretch but ultimately fell, 69-55.
