PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball team battled Texas A&M wire-to-wire Tuesday night, but the Aggies closed the game with a perfect shooting stretch over the final six minutes to claim an 81-73 victory at the Petersen Events Center in the ACC-SEC Challenge.
Pitt led 61-57 with six minutes to play before Texas A&M went 5-of-5 from the field, including one three-pointer, and 13-of-13 from the free-throw line to outscore the Panthers 24-12 the rest of the way.
The Panthers trailed earlier in the second half, 57-45, with 11:55 to play and responded with a 16-0 run to take their largest lead of the night at 61-57. Damarco Minor and Nojus Indrusaitis each scored five points during the surge. Texas A&M, though, was nearly flawless offensively down the stretch.
With a first half field goal, Cameron Corhen reached 1,000 career points and finished the night with 15 points and eight rebounds, making 6-of-8 shots from the field. Barry Dunning, Jr. posted his first double-double as a Panther, tallying 18 points and 12 rebounds along with two blocks, two assists and a steal on 9-of-14 shooting.
Omari Witherspoon had seven points and a career-high eight assists, picking up two steals also. Indrusaitis came off the bench for a career-best 15 points and Minor contributed 14, making 4-of-8 three-pointers.
Pitt shot 48 percent from the field but was undone in part by the free-throw disparity. Texas A&M converted 20-of-22 at the stripe while the Panthers were 7-of-11. The Aggies also held a 36-32 rebounding advantage and committed just nine turnovers, two fewer than Pitt.
Texas A&M improves to 7-2 with the win, while Pitt falls to 5-4. The Panthers return to action Sunday when they host Hofstra at 4 p.m. on ACC Network.
