PITTSBURGH – Sophomore guard Brandin Cummings came off the bench to score a career-high 34 points, including 30 in the second half, but Pitt dropped to Hofstra, 80-73, Sunday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
Cummings' second-half explosion helped Pitt trim a 17-point deficit down to three, but the Panthers were unable to get over the hump as Hofstra held on for the win.
Cummings set or approached several program records with his performance, including:
- Bench Scoring Record: His 34 points set the Pitt record for most points by a bench player, surpassing the previous mark of 32 set by Xavier Johnson against Virginia Tech on Feb. 3. 2021
- Scoring In a Half: His 30-point second half marked the second-highest scoring half by a Pitt player, trailing on Jamel Artis' 32-point second half at Louisville on Jan. 11, 2017.
- Petersen Events Center Scoring: His 34 points were the second-most by a Pitt player in Petersen Events Center history; Blake Hinson set the arena record with 41 against Louisville on Feb. 17, 2024.
Cummings went 8-of-12 from the field in the final 20 minutes, knocking down five three-pointers and making 9-of-9 at the free-throw line. He finished the game with 34 points, five assists and two rebounds.
The game was tied 16-16 midway through the first half, but Hofstra went on a 15-2 run and led 36-23 at the break. The Pride scored the first four points of the second half and still led by 17 at 43-26 with 17:35 to play.
Over the next seven minutes, Cummings took over and the Panthers cut into the deficit. He had 12 points as Pitt went on a 21-7 run to get within three at 50-47. Pitt remained within three at 55-52 with just under 10 minutes to play, but the Pride used a 7-0 run to deflate the comeback hopes and the Panthers were unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way.
Hofstra was led by Cruz Davis, who scored 36 points on 14-of-25 shooting. He had 19 in the first half and 17 in the second. The Pride shot 53 percent from the floor and made 8-of-20 (40 percent) three-pointers.
Pitt shot 46 percent from the field and made 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) three-pointers and 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) free-throws. Hofstra had just seven turnovers, three fewer than Pitt.
Beyond Cummings' standout effort, Barry Dunning, Jr. finished with 13 points, his sixth consecutive double-digit scoring game. Dunning added a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Cameron Corhen had seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
With the win, Hofstra improves to 6-4 on the season. Pitt falls to 5-5 and will look to rebound Saturday as the Panthers visit 7-1 Villanova for a 4:30 p.m. tip.
