THE OPENING TIP

At 2-0 on the season, Pitt concludes its three-game season opening homestand by hosting 1-0 Eastern Michigan Monday night inside the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. with Jason Earle and former Panther Nelly Cummings (older brother of current Pitt guard Brandin Cummings) calling the action on ACCNX.
The game will also be broadcast on the Pitt Radio Network (flagship 93.7 The Fan) with Bill Hillgrove (play-by-play) and Curtis Aiken (analysis) on the broadcast.
Pitt and Eastern Michigan are meeting for the fifth time in the history of the two programs with Pitt holding a 3-1 lead in the all-time series. Most recently, Pitt won a wild double overtime contest inside Petersen Events Center in 2016, 93-90. EMU's only victory in the series was a 67-62 win in Ypsilanti, Mich. in 1982.
The two teams played in the 1988 NCAA Tournament First Round in Lincoln, Neb., with No. 2 seed Pitt coming away with a 108-90 victory. Charles Smith scored 31 points, Demetreus Gore added 24 and Jerome Lane had 22 points and 17 rebounds.
Both Pitt (2-0) and Eastern Michigan (1-0) enter Monday's contest with undefeated records. All three games have been double-digit wins. EMU beat Georgia State 71-49.
Pitt is looking to get out to a 3-0 start for the third consecutive season. A year ago, the Panthers won their first six contests and Pitt was 4-0 to start the 2023-24 season.
