PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball team knocked down 12 three-pointers and the Panthers pulled away for a 78-60 win over Longwood Friday night at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt improved to 2-0 with the win, while Longwood fell to 1-1.
The starting back court of Damarco Minor and Brandin Cummings combined for 42 points on 9-of-15 shooting from three-point range. The duo attempted just 18 shots to get their 42 points and went 13-of-15 from the free-throw line.
Pitt went 23-of-27 from the charity stripe after starting the game by missing seven of its first eight attempts. The Panthers offense struggled through much of the first half and Longwood was able to hang around until Pitt seized control after intermission.
The game was tied at 23-23 when Cummings started a 10-point Pitt run with two free-throws and a three-pointer. Roman Siulepa, who ended the game with 12 points, added two free-throws and Minor connected on a long range shot for a 33-23 advantage. But Longwood answered by scoring the final five points of the first half and the first five of the second half to tie the game once more.
Moments later, Longwood took its only lead of the second half on a tip-in for a 37-36 advantage. But Minor answered with a three-pointer off a pass from Cummings, a basket that put Pitt ahead for good.
Pitt gradually extended the lead, pushing it to double digits when Nojus Indrusaitis converted a driving lay-up with 10:20 to play to make it 55-44. The lead ballooned to 15 when Minor hit a pull up jumper for a 70-55 lead with 4:35 to play. Longwood never got closer than 12 the rest of the way as Pitt closed out the 18-point victory.
Minor led the way with a team-high 23 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. Cummings hit a team-best five threes on his way to 19 points and three assists. Cameron Corhen scored just six points but had 13 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. He is averaging 12.5 rebounds through the first two games of the regular season.
Papa Amadou Kante came off the bench to provide energy, finishing with four points, eight rebounds and a block in just under 20 minutes. He collected five offensive boards, posted a team-best (tying) +18 plus/minus rating, and sparked a pivotal stretch in the second half with two timely baskets as Pitt widened the margin.
Freshman Omari Witherspoon added six points and a team-best four assists in productive minutes.
Pitt held Longwood to just 31.9 percent shooting and 20 percent (4-of-20) from three-point range. The Panthers owned a 48-35 rebounding edge, assisted on 16 of their 21 field goals, and blocked six shots, making it difficult inside for the Lancers all night.
