PITTSBURGH – Senior point guard Damarco Minor drilled a 30-foot runner at the horn to give Pitt (5-3) a dramatic 67-66 win over previously unbeaten Ohio State (6-1) Friday night at the Petersen Events Center.
Minor's heroics came moments after Ohio State's Amare Bynum grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with 3.9 seconds remaining to put the Buckeyes ahead 66-64. Following an Ohio State timeout, Pitt inbounded to Minor, who pushed the ball up the floor, slipped through defenders and pulled up from deep for the game-winner as time expired.
The shot marked Pitt's first true walk-off buzzer beater since Ashton Gibbs sank a three to beat Providence, 73-71, on March 4, 2010. It also came 364 days since Zack Austin buried a three-pointer with 0.4 seconds to play as Pitt beat Ohio State, 91-90, in last season's overtime thriller.
Pitt controlled the opening half, racing out to a 16-4 lead and taking a 34-24 lead into the break. The Buckeyes responded after halftime, tying the game at 42-42 on a Devin Royal three-pointer with 12:51 left to play. They grabbed their first lead on a pair of free-throws with 8:41 to go and remained in front for much of the closing stretch.
Ohio State's largest lead came at 58-53 with 4:12 to play, but Pitt kept countering. Trailing 62-59 with two minutes remaining, Cameron Corhen split a pair of free-throws to make it a one possession game at 62-60. The Panthers then got a stop, and Omari Witherspoon was fouled in transition with 1:21 left, hitting both shots to tie the game at 62-62.
The Buckeyes scored inside on their next trip, but Corhen – 3-of-8 at the line at that point – calmly buried two free-throws with 35.2 seconds left to set the stage for Minor's deciding shot.
Corhen, Minor and Barry Dunning, Jr. all scored 18 points for Pitt and Witherspoon added 11. Roman Siulepa was hampered by foul trouble and only scored two points but had seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Corhen recorded his fourth double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds (five on the offensive glass). Minor tied a career-high with five steals to go with two rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Pitt held a 39-38 rebounding edge, which included 16 on the offensive glass. The Panthers had just five turnovers to 13 for Ohio State. Those advantages contributed to 15 more field goal attempts for the Panthers, helping them withstand a 38 percent shooting night and 5-of-22 performance from three-point range.
Pitt will return to action Tuesday as the Panthers host Texas A&M (6-2) in the Petersen Events Center at 7 p.m.
