PITTSBURGH – Quinnipiac shot 57 percent from the field and knocked down 11-of-17 three-pointers as the Bobcats upset the Pitt men's basketball team, 83-75, in the Skyscanner Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper at the Petersen Events Center Sunday evening. The win snapped Pitt's 14-game home non-conference winning streak and dropped the Panthers to 4-3 on the season. Quinnipiac improves to 4-2.
Four Panthers scored in double-figures, led by Roman Siulepa with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Barry Dunning, Jr., earning his first start at Pitt, scored 17 while Nojus Indrusaitis chipped in 14 off the bench. The team's leading scorer Cameron Corhen ended with 13 points. Pitt played the game without second-leading scorer Brandin Cummings.
The Panthers took their largest lead of the game at 9-4 after Dunning was fouled shooting a three-pointer and made all three charity shots. But Quinnipiac answered with a 20-5 surge over the next seven minutes, and the Panthers spent most of the remainder of the game battling from behind.
Corhen hit a three-pointer that brought Pitt within three at 32-29 but Quinnipiac kept pouring it on offensively and led 47-37 at the break. The Bobcats shot 68 percent from the field in the first half and made 6-of-9 three-point attempts.
Pitt used a 10-0 run early in the second half to tie the score at 51-51. Siulepa scored six in that stretch, including a thunderous tomahawk dunk that briefly swung momentum Pitt's way. But Quinnipiac halted the run with a three-pointer and the Bobcats never trailed again.
The Panthers made several pushes, pulling within three on an Omari Witherspoon three-pointer with 6:40 to play. The Bobcats, though, made their final six shot attempts of the game, four from deep, to seal the win.
Along with his 20 points, Siulepa led Pitt with eight rebounds and four steals. Corhen had seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot to go with his 13 points.
Both teams had 15 turnovers, and Quinnipiac held a slight 22-20 advantage on points off of those turnovers. Pitt outrebounded the Bobcats 33-28 and had 17 on the offensive glass but turned those into just 15 second chance points. Pitt was the more effective team in the paint, outscoring Quinnipiac 36-22.
Pitt now has its largest break since starting the regular season, five days, before hosting Ohio State Friday at 7 p.m.
