PITTSBURGH – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (23-4, 15-2 ACC) earned a dominant sweep over Syracuse (13-14, 5-12 ACC), winning 25-11, 25-9, 25-19 on Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House. Olivia Babcock led the attack with 10 kills, while Brooke Mosher paced the Panthers to a season-high .486 team hitting percentage with 29 assists, eight digs, a kill and a block.
Pitt used its home-court advantage to build a 15-9 lead into the media timeout in set one. A 4-2 run, including three Pitt kills, forced the Orange to use their first timeout. Syracuse burned its second timeout shortly after following kills from Marina Pezelj and Abbey Emch. Babcock then closed out the frame with a strong service run to secure the 25-11 opening-set win.
The Panthers carried the energy into set two, jumping out to a 12-6 lead to prompt an early Orange timeout. An efficient offense and a pair of key blocks pushed Pitt ahead 21-8, forcing Syracuse to spend its final timeout. Kills from Bre Kelley, Blaire Bayless and Pezelj sealed the 25-9 second-set victory.
Freshman Izzy Masten sparked Pitt from the service line in the third set, helping the Panthers open on an 8-2 run as Syracuse called another timeout. The Orange attempted to rally late, but the Panthers maintained control, closing out the match with a 25-19 final-set win.
The Panthers return for the final match in the Fitzgerald Field House on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Boston College.
