ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Pitt wrestling team wrapped up its opening weekend of the 2025-26 campaign with a strong performance at the Navy Classic Sunday afternoon. The Panthers finished second in the team standings with 126.0 points as Mac Stout led the Panthers by winning the 197-pound title.
The Panthers advanced nine wrestlers to the semifinal round and featured four finalists overall. As a team, Pitt recorded 21 bonus-point victories throughout the day.
Nine other Panthers placed across eight different weight classes. Tyler Chappell (125), Dylan Evans (165), and Dayton Pitzer (285) each earned runner-up finishes. Luke Daly (184) rounded out the group with a fifth-place finish.
Stout was dominant throughout the tournament, earning three of his four victories by technical fall. He opened with back-to-back tech falls over Josh Anthony (Navy) and Donovan Sprouse (George Mason) both in under three minutes. The redshirt junior defeated Zyan Hall (Navy) by a 5-1 decision to reach the finals. Stout delivered another impressive showing in the finals, defeating All-American and sixth-ranked Camden McDanel of Nebraska by a 20-4 tech fall to claim the title.
At 125 pounds, Chappell won four straight matches to reach the finals, including a victory over No. 26 Desmond Pleasant (Drexel) in the Round of 16. Chappell dropped in sudden victory, 8-5, to No. 23 Keyveon Roller (Virginia) to take second place.
Evans also turned a strong runner-up finish at 165-pounds, dominating his way through the bracket. He won three consecutive matches by bonus points, opening with a technical fall, major decision and a fall. In the finals, he dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 32 Leandro Araujo (Nebraska).
Pitzer reached the final match at 285 after posting wins by a tech fall, decision, and major decision in the early rounds. In a rematch from the dual a day prior, he faced No. 29 Spencer Lanosga (Navy) and dropped a 6-4 decision to finish second overall.
