PITTSBURGH – Senior transfer Barry Dunning, Jr. delivered his best performance in a Pitt uniform Monday night, drilling seven three-pointers and scoring 23 points as the Panthers rolled to an 84-50 win over Bucknell. The victory pushes Pitt to 4-1 on the season, while the Bison drop to 2-3.
A First Team All-Sun Belt player at South Alabama last year, Dunning had struggled to find his footing early, scoring just 11 total points on 2-of-15 shooting through Pitt's first four games. He sparked the Panthers' offense as he came off the bench, helping Pitt break the 80-point barrier for the first time this season.
The two teams were locked at 11-11 more than eight minutes into the action before Pitt ripped off a 12-0 run that gave the Panthers their first double-digit lead of the game. Dunning capped that run with a driving lay-up and a contested three-pointer.
Bucknell briefly clawed back within four at 21-17, but Dunning answered with another three that sparked a 9-1 run, pushing the lead to 30-18. After the Bison trimmed the lead to eight, Dunning buried back-to-back triples, sending Pitt to halftime with a 38-25 advantage.
Dunning came off the bench again in the second half and stayed hot, connecting three more times from deep as Pitt stretched its lead to as many as 40 points. Bucknell narrowed the margin in the final minutes, but that was just window dressing as the Panthers cruised to the 34-point win.
Dunning finished 8-of-13 from the field and 7-of-11 from three, adding seven rebounds, a block and a steal. Four other Panthers all scored 11 points – Cameron Corhen, Brandin Cummings, Omari Witherspoon and Nojus Indrusaitis.
Corhen packed the stat sheet with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Witherspoon tied for team-high with five assists and added three steals. Papa Amadou Kante provided an energetic lift off the bench, recording career highs with 11 rebounds and five assists with no turnovers.
Pitt shot 51 percent from the field and a blistering 52 percent from three (13-of-25). The Panthers dominated the glass 42-29, including 15 offensive rebounds, and finished with 20 assists, 10 steals and 38 bench points.
Pitt now turns its attention to the Skyscanner Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper. The Panthers face UCF Thursday at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. with tipoff set for 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
