MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – West Virginia used an 18-2 first half run and a 12-0 run to open the second to defeat the Pitt men's basketball team, 71-49, Thursday evening in Hope Coliseum. West Virginia improved to 4-0 on the season, while Pitt lost for the first time to drop to 3-1.
West Virginia opened the game with the first five points and held a 10-6 advantage before Pitt answered with a 9-0 burst, keyed by five quick points from Omari Witherspoon.
An alley-oop from Brandin Cummings to Cameron Corhen pushed the Panthers' lead to 21-14, their largest of the game. The Mountaineers countered with a three-pointer and a layup to pull within two and then stretched the surge into an 18-2 run to move in front 32-23. WVU carried a 34-25 lead into halftime as Pitt missed its final eight field-goal attempts of the period.
The Mountaineers took the first double-digit lead of the game on the opening possession of the second half with a layup and scored the first 12 points of the period to make it 46-25.
Down 48-27, Pitt got back-to-back three-pointers from Nojus Indrusaitis and Roman Siulepa to cut the deficit to 15. After a WVU basket, Corhen knocked down a three to make it 50-36. Witherspoon then scored on the break to bring Pitt to within 12.
After a WVU turnover and a media timeout, Indrusaitis scored on a driving layup to make it a 10-point game, but West Virginia answered with 13 straight points to end the hopes of a Pitt comeback.
Corhen had his second double-double of the year, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding two assists, two steals and two blocks. Witherspoon ended with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
