Pitt Takes Season Opener with 20-12 Win Over Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Pitt wrestling team opened the 2025-26 season with a 20-12 victory over Navy Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Panthers took control midway through the match with three straight wins, including two by bonus points, that helped secure the season-opening victory.

Evan Tallmadge earned a sudden-victory win at 133 to tie the match after Navy won the opening bout. Tallmadge trailed 1-0 entering the third period but started the final two minutes strong. Tallmadge and Brendan Ferretti exchanged reversals before Tallmadge took a 3-2 edge with 42 seconds remaining. Ferretti got an escape to send the match to overtime, but Tallmadge avoided two takedown attempts and secured one of his own for a 6-3 victory.

Kade Brown, ranked No. 17 at 149, bounced back for the Panthers with a 17-3 major decision after dropping the 141-pound match. Brown started off strong, taking a 6-1 lead after the first period. The redshirt freshman added an escape and another takedown for a 10-1 lead with 45 seconds remaining in the second. He added two more takedowns in the final two minutes and earned a point for riding time to secure the 17-3 victory and give Pitt its first lead of the dual at 7-6.

The Panthers went on to win the next two bouts to extend their lead to 14-6. Freshman Vince Bouzakis made his Panther debut at 157 pounds and secured the victory after a hard-fought match that went two overtime periods. Dylan Evans, ranked No. 21 at 157, wrestled at 165-pounds and scored a takedown and three near fall points as time expired in the third period to earn a 9-1 victory over No. 29 Dylan Elmore.

In a marquee matchup at 174 pounds, No. 15 Luca Augustine held a 5-3 lead over No. 5 Danny Wask with five seconds remaining. Wask attacked and scored a takedown with one second left in the match to secure the dramatic victory in the ranked match up.

Pitt followed with wins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds. Chase Kranitz had another late takedown in the third period to earn a 4-1 victory at 184 pounds, while Mac Stout, ranked No. 5 at 197, defeated No. 20 Payton Thomas, 5-2.
