No. 4 Pitt Records Second Straight Sweep with Win over Wake Forest

PITTSBURGH - The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (17-3, 9-1 ACC) swept Wake Forest (9-12, 3-7 ACC) 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-13) Sunday afternoon in the Fitzgerald Field House. Olivia Babcock led the match with 16 kills on a .560 hitting percentage, and senior libero Emery Dupes recorded her 1,000th career dig, ending the day with 11.
Pitt started on a hot streak and got out to an early 11-2 lead. Wake Forest gave its best effort to tie things up, but the Pitt offense clicked on all cylinders causing Wake Forest to take its first timeout at 18-9. Three Pitt kills and a Marina Pezelj ace forced the Demon Deacons to call their final timeout, down 22-12. A kill from Brooke Mosher and two unforced errors on the side of Wake Forest allowed Pitt to win set one, 25-13.
The Panthers and Demon Deacons went back and forth in the beginning of set two, but Pitt went on a 6-2 run behind an ace a piece from Babcock and Mallorie Meyer to force a Wake Forest timeout at 11-6. The Panther middle blockers came alive in the following stretch as Emch and Jones influenced Wake Forest to take its second timeout down 17-11. Another strong service run from Meyer and a Babcock kill finalized the set two win for the Panthers, 25-17.
Pitt carried its momentum over from the second frame and continued to dominate in set three, causing the Demon Deacons to take a timeout at 9-4. Wake Forest called another timeout to stop the bleeding but was unable to come back as the Panthers took the third set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.
Pitt hits the road once again and plays Duke on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and No. 21 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The matches can be streamed on ACCNX and ACC Network, respectively.
