PITTSBURGH - The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (18-3, 10-1 ACC) earned the sweep over Duke (5-17, 2-9 ACC) 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 on Friday night in Cameron Indoor Coliseum. Olivia Babcock recorded a team-high 10 kills along with six digs, four blocks and three aces. Brooke Mosher paced the Panthers to a team .380 hitting percentage with 30 assists, seven digs and three aces.
The Panthers and Blue Devils went back and forth for the beginning of the first set until Pitt held the 15-12 lead at the media timeout. A handful of Duke errors and back-to-back aces from Mosher forced the Blue Devils to call a timeout at 22-17 and once again at 23-17. An Izzy Masten ace and a hitting error from the Duke attack solidified the first set win for the Panthers, 25-18.
Pitt held the momentum from set one and extended its lead to 10-4 after two consecutive aces from Babcock. The Panthers rolled in the following stretch as its serve and offense was too much for Duke to handle, causing the Blue Devils to call a timeout, down 18-7. Kills from three different Panthers, including Babcock, Sophia Gregoire and Marina Pezelj propelled Pitt to a 25-15 second set victory.
Masten impressed behind the service line as Duke took an early timeout, down 8-1. The Panthers continued to step on the brakes as Duke had no choice but to call another timeout at 18-8. Pitt wrapped up the set 25-13 and the match, 3-0.
Pitt wraps up the weekend against No. 21 North Carolina in Carmichael Arena on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on ACC Network for a battle for first place in the ACC.
