
Panthers Welcome Penn State for Rivalry Meet at Trees Pool

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Swimming and Diving program is set to host in-state rival Penn State this weekend at Trees Pool. Diving competition begins Friday, Oct. 24, at 4:45 p.m., followed by swimming events on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11:30 a.m.

Series History
- The Pitt men hold a 36–17 all-time advantage over the Nittany Lions but most recently fell 211–142 during the 2024–25 season. The last time the Panthers hosted Penn State, Pitt earned a 180–171 victory at Trees Pool.
- On the women's side, Penn State holds a 23–11 series lead, though the Panthers have claimed the last two meetings. Pitt looks to secure its third straight win over the Nittany Lions for the first time in program history and its first home victory in the series since the 1988–89 season.
Last Time Out
- Thirteen members of the Pitt swimming team returned from a successful showing at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Illinois, where they competed against elite international swimmers and recorded five top-12 finishes.
- Earlier this month, the Panthers opened their season with dominant wins over Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne at Trees Pool on Oct. 11. Pitt swept all 14 events, including seven by the women's team. Sydney Gring and Alex Bauer competed in every event throughout the meet.
Scouting Penn State
- Penn State opened its season at home against St. Bonaventure, where the Nittany Lion men earned a 228–72 victory and the women posted a 211–81 win.
Panthers to Watch
- Mariana Osorio Mendoza – Two-time NCAA qualifier and ACC Championships finalist entering her third year with the program. Finished sixth on platform at the ACC Championships and won bronze on platform at the 2024 World Junior Championships. Represented Colombia at the World Championships this summer.
- Noah Bernard – Junior Worlds finalist and NCAA and ACC Championships qualifier as a freshman. Two-time ACC Diver of the Week during the 2024–25 season.
- Julian Koch – ACC Championships qualifier who set multiple school records as a freshman. Finished 16th in the 100 freestyle at the ACC Championships and captured silver at the European U23 Championships. Currently ranks among the top 70 in the world with a 48.51 LCM freestyle at the TYR Pro Championships in Irvine.
- Claire Jansen – Seven-time school record holder in the 50, 100, and 200 backstroke events. 2025 NCAA Honorable Mention All-American, helping the Pitt women achieve their highest NCAA team finish in 29 years. Currently ranks among the top 75 in the world in the 50 (28.89) and 200 (2:11.78) backstroke.
- Sydney Gring – NCAA and ACC Championships qualifier and multiple school record holder entering her third season. Helped set Pitt records in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays at the NCAA Championships. The Panthers' 800 free relay recorded the highest NCAA relay finish in program history.
