Need to Know - Match 15
Pitt (5-6-3, 1-4-1 ACC) vs. Wake Forest (6-3-5, 1-3-2 ACC)
Friday, Oct. 24, 2025 – 7:00 p.m. – ACCNX
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Ambrose Urbanic Field
The Opening Kick
- Friday's matchup features two of the nation's premier programs. Pitt captured the 2024 ACC regular season championship, while Wake Forest claimed the conference tournament crown.
- Both advanced to the national quarterfinals last fall.
- Graduate midfielder Arnau Vilamitjana powered the Panthers past Syracuse with his first career hat trick, becoming just the third Pitt player in the past decade to accomplish the feat—joining Luis Sahmkow and Edward Kizza (twice).
- Vilamitjana's opening goal against the Orange ended a 356-minute scoring drought for the Panthers. He leads the team with 19 points on eight goals and three assists.
- Pitt's four goals against Syracuse were the most the Orange had allowed since Oct. 25 of last season. Of note, the Orange entered Saturday's match having conceded just eight goals all year.
- Gavin Wetzel (54) and Grayson Carter (80) were both named to the TopDrawerSoccer Midseason Top 100 Freshman list.
- Pitt enters the weekend ranked 65th in the RPI.
The Series
- Friday will mark the seventh all-time meeting between Pitt and Wake Forest, as the Panthers own a 1-5 record.
Scouting the Demon Deacons
- Wake Forest has compiled a 6-3-5 record this season, including a 1-3-2 mark in ACC play.
- The Demon Deacons are 2-2-2 over their last six matches and currently sit 44th in RPI.
- Individually, the Deacs are led by Cooper Flax – who has tallied six goals and five assists for 17 total points.
Last Time Out (vs. Syracuse)
Led by a hat trick from Vilamitjana, Pitt knocked off Syracuse, 4-2, Saturday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
After redshirt senior midfielder Tomas Bedouret was taken down in the box, Vilamitjana opened the scoring in the eighth minute, burying a penalty kick to give the Panthers an early lead.
Syracuse quickly responded in the 14th minute, but Pitt regained the advantage in the 33rd when junior forward Albert Thorsen tucked away a pass from sophomore defender Niklas Soerensen to make it 2-1 at halftime.
Vilamitjana struck again early in the second half, finishing a combination from Carter and Thorsen in the 48th minute. The Orange answered less than two minutes later to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Vilamitjana completed his hat trick in the 67th minute, converting a feed from junior midfielder Logan Oliver and Soerensen to restore a two-goal cushion.
Pitt outshot Syracuse 21-11 and held firm defensively down the stretch, with junior goalkeeper Jack Moxom making three saves to secure the win.
