Panthers Drop Doubleheader to NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Kat Rodriguez combined to hit two home runs and drove in five of the Panthers six runs, but the Panthers ultimately dropped both games of the doubleheader to NC State Friday evening.

Pitt 2, NC State 9
The Wolfpack attacked early, loading the bases after the first four batters came to the plate. NC State scored two runs in the first inning after Hannah Goodwin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Ellie Goins hit a sac fly to left field.

Adriana Romano entered the circle in the bottom of the first with one out and retired the two batters faced with seven pitches.

Alena Ball drew a walk to lead off the top of the second and KK Esparza hit a single through the left side to put runners on first and second. Ana Hernandez hit a sac bunt to move the Panthers into scoring position with one out. The Panthers weren't able to convert any runs as the inning ended on a fly out.

NC State extended their lead to 3-0 after three innings of play with a Taylor Ensley solo home run to center field. Michele Tarpey added two more in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to left field.

Kylie Griggs hit a leadoff single and Rodriguez hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to get the Panthers on the board.

The Wolfpack scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 9-2 victory.

Pitt 4, NC State 8
NC State took an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first and scored another run in the bottom of the second on a sac fly with the bases loaded. Rodriguez answered in the top of third inning with her second home run of the day, giving the Panthers a 3-2 edge.

NC State plated five runs on four hits in the third inning to take back the lead, 7-3. The Wolfpack sent seven batters to the plate in the frame. The Wolfpack drew two straight walks and drove in one more run off a single in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 8-3.

The Panthers scored one more run in the top of the sixth inning from a Macy Hamilton single to left field.

Olivia Stefanoni recorded the loss after entering the circle in the bottom of the third. Stefanoni ended the game retiring eight straight batters in the final three frames.
