Pitt Uses Offensive Power to Secure Series Win Over Syracuse

PITTSBURGH – Pitt hit four home runs and scored six runs in the first inning to secure the series win against Syracuse, 7-5, on Senior Day at Vartabedian Field. The Panthers and Orange scored a combined 10 runs on 12 hits in the first two innings and were each held scoreless for the next four frames.

Cami Compson went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double, a home run, and a walk to lead the Panthers' offense that totaled 11 hits. Desirae Martinez (2-for-3, HR), Rachael Fuerst (2-for-3, HR), and Ana Hernandez (2-for-3, HR) also picked up multi-hit efforts for the Panthers. Kylie Griggs extended her on-base streak to 16 straight games after drawing two walks and stealing two bases.

The Panthers celebrated senior day with a home run party in the bottom of the first inning, scoring six runs on six hits. Pitt hit four home runs in the inning as Compson got the rally started with a two-run homer to center field. Three of the four home runs came with two outs as Martinez hit a solo shot to center field. Fuerst and Hernandez hit back-to-back homers to left field to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

The Orange scored three runs in the top of the second inning with back-to-back singles and two walks. Angel Jasso hit a two-RBI single to cut the deficit in half. Pitt extended its lead, 7-3, in the bottom of the second with an Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez RBI single to right field.

Adriana Romano entered with two outs in the top of the second and retired the first three batters faced. Romano held the Orange scoreless for 4.1 innings before giving up a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Olivia Stefanoni reentered in the top of the seventh inning and earned the save after retiring two batters and leaving two runners stranded.

The Panthers host Ohio University at Vartabedian Field, Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Panthers will have a bye weekend and will return to action against Robert Morris on April 30 at Vartabedian Field.
