Pitt Drops First Game to No. 12 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Pitt Panthers fell to the No. 12 Virginia Tech Hokies, 18-0, in the series opener at Tech Softball Park, Friday evening. The Panthers were held to three hits with Kat Rodriguez (1-for-2), Kylie Griggs (1-for-2), and KK Esparza (1-for-2) picking up hits for the Panthers.
Rodriguez leadoff with a single through the right side to pick up the first hit for the Panthers. Kylie Griggs extended her hitting streak to a season-high five games with a double off the wall to leadoff the second inning. In the top of the fourth, Cami Compson drew a walk as KK Esparza singled through the right side to get the Panthers in scoring position. Rachael Fuerst drew another walk to load the bases, but the Panthers weren't able to rally for a run.
The Hokies had a hot start as they scored seven runs on three home runs in the bottom of the first inning. Virginia Tech scored four more runs in the second inning off three hits and added four runs in the bottom of the third. The Hokies scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth as they totaled xx home runs on the night.
Emma Lemley earned the win for the Hokies after tossing 4.0 innings with three hits and eight strikeouts while Kyra Pittman (4-6) was credited with the loss.
