Pitt Falls in Close One-Run Game at FGCU, 3-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kat Rodriguez led the Panthers, going 3-for-4 at the plate but Pitt wasn't able to get a rally started in the top of the seventh as they dropped to FGCU, 3-2, to close out the FGCU Spring Break Classic, early Sunday afternoon.

Rodriguez recorded her second consecutive three-hit game, combining to go 6-for-8 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored over the last two games. KK Esparza (2-for-3) and Cami Compson (2-for-4) each recorded multi-hit efforts as Compson extended her hit streak to a season-high six games. Macy Hamilton (1-for-3) and Kylie Griggs (1-for-3) also recorded hits to each extend their hitting streak to three games.

Rodriguez ledoff the top of the first inning with a single. FGCU got on the board, scoring two early runs in the bottom of the first on three hits. The Panthers and Eagles were each held scoreless over the next two innings until KK Esparza plated a run off a double to right center to make it a one-run game at 2-1.

Rodriguez tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth with a double to left field. The Panther pitchers combined to hold the Eagles scoreless four 4.0 innings before the Eagles scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Hamilton and Compson hit back-to-back singles to get the game-tying run in scoring position with two outs, but Pitt was unable to convert as the Eagles came up with the victory.

Allison Sparkman earned the win for FGCU as Kendall Brown had the loss after giving up one earned run on two hits, with two strikeouts and two walks in 2.0 innings.
