Panthers Fall Just Short of No. 7/8 Oklahoma State

Pitt Drops Both Games of a Doubleheader at South Florida Showdown
TAMPA, Fla. – Pitt was anchored by strong defense and pitching despite falling to No. 7/8 Oklahoma State, 1-0, in the first game of the day but could not get the offense going in game two as they dropped to host USF, 4-0, at the South Florida Showdown, Saturday.

Adriana Romano had a strong outing in the circle and Ana Hernandez made two incredible defensive plays as the Panthers held the Cowgirls scoreless until the sixth inning. Romano gave up one single in the bottom of the first before striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
Macy Hamilton and Hernandez got the Panthers in scoring position off back-to-back singles with two outs in the top of the third. Pitt couldn't get on the board as the inning ended on a strikeout.
After giving up a combined two hits over the first two innings, Romano retired the side in the fourth and in the fifth inning. The junior allowed just one hit and a hit by pitch from the second-fifth innings.
The Cowgirls scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth after back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. Romano walked in a run before Olivia Stefanoni entered the circle and struck out her lone batter faced and stranded three Cowgirl runners.
The Panthers held the Cowgirls to just one run scored for the second time this season. The Cowgirls entered the game outscoring their opponents 23-2 over their last three games at the South Florida Showdown.
Pitt 0, USF 4
The Panthers and Bulls were scoreless through the first two innings as Kyra Pittman did not give up a hit through the first three innings. USF got on the board in the third inning off a deep fly ball that was dropped in center field, putting the Bulls up 2-0.
The Bulls increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kathy Garcia-Soto got on base with a single to third. Garcia-Soto stole second and scored off a missed throw from the Panthers. DaNia Brooks hit a double off the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth to extend the Bulls, 4-0.
Jordan George led off the top of the seventh with a pinch-hit single, followed by back-to-back walks from Kylie Griggs and Kat Rodriguez to load the bases with no outs. The Bulls retired the next three Panther batters on flyouts to end the game as the Panthers fell to 6-7 on the season.
Up Next
The Panthers wrap up the weekend with a single game against Loyola-Chicago, Sunday at 9 a.m. Pitt will return to action on Friday with its first ACC series at Georgia Tech from March 1-3.
