TAMPA, Fla. – The Panthers split the first day of the South Florida Showdown after defeating Yale, 4-1, and falling to No. 4 Washington, 6-2, at the USF Softball Stadium Saturday morning.
Pitt 4, Yale 1
Olivia Stefanoni retired the side to start the game and gave up one run and three hits through the first three innings. Macy Hamilton broke up the Yale no-hitter with a leadoff double down the right field line in the top of the fourth.
The Panthers' bats came alive in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. Cami Compson got the rally started with a leadoff homer to center field to even the score at 1-1. Kylie Griggs got on base with a double through the left side, sliding safely into second on a close throw. Kat Rodriguez came up to bat and hit a no-doubter to left field on a 2-0 pitch to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
Griggs reached base on a throwing error and eventually scored the Panthers' final run of the game off a Hamilton single to left field.
Hamilton finished going 3-for-4 with an RBI as both Rodriguez and Compson finished 1-for-3 with a home run.
Stefanoni (2-2) earned the win, giving up just one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts compared to two walks. Adriana Romano recorded a save with 2.0 shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk.
Pitt 2, Washington 6
The Huskies and the Panthers both got on the board early after the Huskies struck first off, a Rylee Holtorf solo home run in the top of the first. Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, giving the Panthers a 2-1 edge.
Kyra Pittman gave up a single at the top of the second inning and retired the next three straight batters. Macy Hamilton made an incredible sliding catch on the left field line to end the second and hold the Panthers lead.
Pitt and Washington each did not score over the next two innings, as Pittman held the Huskies to a combined two hits and stranded three runners in the third and in the second. The Panthers struggled in the circle in the fifth inning as Washington took a 6-2 lead after scoring five runs on two hits.
Pittman exited the game with one out in the top of the fifth after issuing back-to-back walks and back-to-back singles. The junior finished the day allowing five earned runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout, over 4.1 innings.
