The Opening Tip
Newcomers Lead the Way
In last week's exhibition, junior guard Amiya Jenkins led all scorers, shooting 8-for-15 from the field, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Lexington, Ky., native shot 8-for-11 from the charity stripe. The Panthers were paced by Jenkins, redshirt sophomore guard Mikayla Johnson and graduate center Khadija Faye as the trio combined for 54 of Pitt's 106 points.
Getting It Done On Both Ends
As a unit, Pitt shot 50 percent (37-of-74) from the field, while holding the Mountain Cats to just 27.1 percent (13-of-48) for the contest. The Panthers also recorded 22 assists as a team, while committing only 11 turnovers – resulting in an impressive 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. Of note, senior guard Brooklynn Miles recorded eight assists individually.
Returning Production
Pitt returns three of its top five scorers from a season ago, including Aislin Malcolm – who led the team in three-point percentage (31.6 percent). Additionally, Pitt returns Marley Washenitz, the lone Panther to register 100+ assists last year. Returning guards Bella Perkins and Aaryn Battle will also look to make an impact this season. Of note, Perkins led the team in three-pointers with 52.
Malcolm Looking to Step Up
Malcolm will look to turn into a consistent scoring threat this season for the Panthers. Last season, she averaged a career-high 9.3 points, while shooting 36.9 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from behind the arc. She played 30+ minutes in 27 of 32 games last season after not playing 30 minutes in a single game in 2022-23. Malcolm also scored in double figures in a career-high 14 games last season, including five in ACC play.
