PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) opened their home slate with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Drexel Dragons (1-1-0, 0-0-0 CAA) Sunday afternoon in front of 657 fans at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Junior Sarah Schupansky netted a brace in the home opening win for Pitt.
With the win, Pitt has won all six of head coach Randy Waldrum's home openers since taking over the program.
The scoring started right away for Pitt on Sunday as Schupansky netted her first of the game in the eighth minute after a couple of nice passes from Ashton Gordon and Chloe Minas set her up and she beat the keeper to the lower left corner.
Just over three minutes later, Samiah Phiri made it 2-0 in favor of the Panthers as she took a Minas feed and buried the hard low shot into the lower left corner of the goal. Schupansky came right to give the Panthers the three-goal lead in the 13th minute as she beat the keeper for her second of the match after a pair of passes from Landy Mertz and Amanda West helped create some space for the goal.
Pitt took the dominant 3-0 lead into the locker room as they outshot the Dragons 12-5 through 45 minutes of action.
Out of the locker room, Pitt made it 4-0 as West finished off an easy goal with the keeper out of position. Deborah Abiodun and Mertz notched the assists on West's second goal of the season. The helper for Abiodun marked her first career point in her first career appearance as a Panther. The goal for West gives her 41 for her career, a program record.
The Dragons finally broke through with their lone goal of the match in the 55th minute as Gabrielle Perrotto fed Delaney Lappin and she buried the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-1 in favor of Pitt.
The Panthers held on down the stretch with a lot of bench players saw action as they secured the 4-1 home victory.
For the match, Pitt held the dominant 22-10 edge in shots and the 12-0 lead in corners. In goal, Ellie Breech made one save for Pitt while Joella Chase finished with three first half saves in the loss for Drexel. West led all players with five shots (two on goal) while Schupansky, Phiri and Ellie Coffield each record three shots in the win.
