Eight Panthers collected hits today as Sky Duff and Jack Anderson each drove in a run and had multiple-hit games. Duff went 3-5 with an RBI, as Anderson went 2-4 with a walk and an RBI. Noah Martinez singled in the top of the first inning, extending his on-base streak to 20 games
The Panthers strung together three consecutive singles to right field by Sky Duff, Justin Acal, and Noah Martinez to open up this ballgame. Sky Duff led it off with a single through the right side, his second time this series leading off the game with a hit. Justin Acal followed him with a single of his own to right field, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Noah Martinez came to the dish and beat the shift through the right side for Pitt's third consecutive single to right field. Justin Acal got a little too far off the bag as he rounded second, causing the first baseman the cut off the throw from right field and attempt to throw him out at second. He airmailed the throw into center field, allowing Duff the score from third while moving both Acal and Martinez into scoring position. With two runners in scoring position and no one out, the Panthers weren't able to capitalize as they went down in order following the Martinez single.
Georgia Tech came right back in the bottom half of the first and took their first lead of this game. After a double off the left field wall by Jake DeLeo, Stephen Reid came up and smacked his second homerun of the weekend, this time off the scoreboard in left. The Yellow Jackets led 2-1 after one.
They added to their lead in the bottom of the third, putting up a three-spot in the inning, making it 5-1. Kyle Mosley was pulled following a double, a groundout, and an intentional walk to start the inning. Dylan Simmons was the first Panther to come out of the bullpen for the second straight game as Georgia Tech added three more runs following the pitching change.
Dom Popa laced a one out single up the middle in the top of the fourth for his fourth his of the weekend. The Panthers executed a flawless hit and run as Anthony LaSala lined a ball into center while Popa broke for second, leaving runners at the corners with one out. Sky Duff knocked in his 22nd run of the season with a single down the left field line to pull Pitt one run closer as they trailed 5-2.
Right fielder Stephen Reid continued to be the thorn in the Panthers' side this weekend, as he hit his second two-run shot of the game, and third homerun in the series in the bottom of the fourth inning. They led 7-2 thru four.
Georgia Tech scored a total of eight more runs in the final three innings, including Stephen Reids third homerun of the game in the sixth inning. Scoring three in the sixth and seventh innings, and two in the bottom of the eighth.
Sky Duff led off the top of the eighth inning with his third single of the game. Jack Anderson drove in his 32nd run of the season on a single to right center for his second base-knock of the game, scoring Duff from third. Both Brett Heckert and Caleb Sturtevant collected hits in their pinch-hit appearances in the top of the ninth inning, as the Panthers lost the series finale 15-3.
Pitt returns to the diamond this Wednesday, May 10, at Charles L. Cost Field as they host No. 12 West Virginia in this season's third and final installment of the Backyard Brawl.
