MORGANTOWN, WV -- The Pitt Panthers (20-22, 8-11 ACC) fell to the No. 12 West Virginia Mountaineers (34-11, 11-4 BIG-12) in Morgantown Wednesday evening 10-0 (7 inn.)
The Mountaineer offense struck early and often, scoring at least one run in each of the first five frames. The Panthers would get runners on in multiple innings but did not have timely hitting. Pitt had four hits in the ballgame, Noah Martinez went 2-3 with two singles, Jack Anderson went 1-1 with 2 BB, and Sky Duff went 1-4 with a single.
Pitt had a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning. Following back-to-back singles by Jack Anderson and Noah Martinez, the Panthers had runners on first and second with two outs. Right fielder CJ Funk would strike out swinging to end the threat in the next at-bat.
They manufactured their first run in the bottom of the first inning. JJ Wetherholt singled through the right side of the infield, stole second, and advancing to third on an errant throw by catcher Jayden Melendez. He would be brought home following a Landon Wallace single in the preceding at-bat. West Virginia added their second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a Cam McNeely solo shot over the leftfield wall.
West Virginia added a total of 5 more runs throughout the next two innings, highlighted by a three-run shot by one of the best hitters in the nation JJ Werherholt.
Pitt had runners again on in the top of the fourth inning, Jack Anderson with a leadoff walk and Noah Martinez with another single remained the only two Panthers to get on base. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Anderson and Martinez would both be left stranded again, for the second time in the ballgame. West Virginia led 7-0 after four innings of play.
The Panthers had their chances in this ballgame, they left a total of eight runners on base through seven innings. Their final threat came in the top of the fifth inning.
Following two outs to Dom Popa and Anthony LaSala, the top of the order came up, worked good at-bats, and got on base. Sky Duff started their two-out offense with a single up the middle, followed then by two walks to Kyle Hess and Jack Anderson. Anderson reached base in all three of his plate appearances Wednesday evening. Pitt's biggest offense weapon, Noah Martinez, came up with the bases loaded looking to get the Panthers on the board. He smoked a ball the other way, deep into the left-centerfield gap, but not deep enough. West Virginia's center fielder raced back, 5 feet from the outfield wall, and caught the ball to end the inning and Pitt's last offensive threat of the night.
West Virginia added three more runs in the last two frames to end this one in seven innings, 10-0.
Pitt returns to ACC play this Friday, May 5th at 6 p.m., as they travel to Georgia Tech to take on the Yellow Jackets.
