DURHAM, NC -- Pitt will be playing in their third consecutive ACC Tournament. The program had only made one ACC Tournament appearance prior to the 2021 season.
The tournament will start on Tuesday May 23rd with the championship game to be played Sunday afternoon on May 28th. All games will be played at Durham Bulls Athletics Park in Durham, North Carolina.
The ACC Tournament consists of four pools with three teams each. The 12th seeded Panthers will be playing in Pool A, alongside the No. 1 team in the country and No. 1 seed in the tournament Wake Forest and No. 8 seed Notre Dame.
Pitt will play two of the four 11 a.m. games, facing Notre Dame on Wednesday May 24 to open their pool play schedule. They will have a quick turnaround as they will face No. 1 Wake Forest the very next day, Thursday May 25, at 11 a.m. In order to advance to the semifinal game, they must win both games. If all three teams split and go 1-1, the higher seed (No. 1 Wake Forest in this instance) would advance.
The Panthers found success against both of these teams during the middle of the season. They took the series finale from the Fighting Irish in early April with a late-inning comeback victory as they scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Noah Martinez, Kyle Hess, and CJ Funk all recorded three-hit games.
Pitt also shutout then No. 2 Wake Forest in their series opener in mid-April 3-0, the only team to shutout the Demon Deacons this season. The Panthers got an early cushion on home runs by Jayden Melendez and Justin Acal in the first and second innings. Jack Sokol threw six stellar innings, as Dylan Simmons and Nash Bryan came on in relief to close it out.
Pool B consists of the No. 2 seed Virginia, No. 7 seed North Carolina, and No. 11 seed Georgia Tech. Pool C will include the No. 3 seed Clemson, No. 6 seed Boston College, and the No. 10 seed Virginia Tech. While the fourth and final pool (Pool D) includes the No. seed 4 Miami, No. 5 seed Duke, and No. 9 seed NC State.
The pool play schedule will be four days long (Tuesday – Friday) and there will three games a day (11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m.). The semifinal games will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. as the championship game will be at Noon on Sunday afternoon. All games will be broadcasted on the ACC Network with the championship game being broadcasted on ESPN 2.
As the 11 seed last season, Pitt beat the No. 7 seed Georgia Tech and walked it off against the No. 2 seed Louisville to win their pool and clinch a berth in the ACC Semifinal Game. They faced the No. 10 seed NC State in Saturday's semifinal and ultimately came up short.
