PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team (20-21, 8-11 ACC) earned a three-game sweep over the California Golden Bears (18-22, 6-15 PAC 12) Sunday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field as they secured the 10-5 win. The Panthers scored 29 runs across the series sweep, the most runs scored across a three-game series this season.

For the second straight game, a Pitt pitcher posted a career-high in strikeouts as Kyle Mosley struck out seven batters across five innings of work as he secured his first win of the season. Mosley spread out seven Cal hits while only allowing one earned run in his best showing of the season.

CJ Funk had a big day at the plate for the Panthers as he went 3-for-3 for three RBI, two runs and two walks. The junior now ranks second on the squad with 39 RBI and 44 runs scored while reaching base safely in 38 straight games. Noah Martinez continued his hot streak at the plate as he went 1-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a pair of walks as he now has a team-high 42 RBI and 42 walks on the year.

Jayden Melendez notched his first three-hit game of his career as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Jack Anderson finished his game going 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored in the win.
After Mosley opened the game with three strikeouts in the first inning, the Pitt offense got off to a great start in the bottom half of the inning as they scored four runs. Anderson started things off with a single and he scored the first run of the game as Martinez ripped a RBI double into the right field gap. After Funk single put runners on the corners for Pitt, Martinez scored on an error by the Cal first baseman to allow Kyle Hess to reach second and Funk moved to third. Melendez then capped the scoring for Pitt as he ripped a 2-RBI single into left field.

Cal fought back with three runs in the top of the second, two unearned, to make it 4-3 in favor of Pitt heading into the bottom half of the inning. The Panthers offense came right back with three of their own runs as Sky Duff scored on an Anderson double to left center. Funk then connected on his first triple of the season to score Anderson and he came around to score on Hess' RBI single to right field to make it 7-3 in favor of Pitt through two innings.

The offensive onslaught continued in the bottom half of the third inning as Pitt plated three more runs to make it 10-3. Melendez opened the inning with a single before Carlos Martinez and Duff helped to load the bases with one out. Noah Martinez then earned a basses loaded walk to plate Melendez and Funk connected on a 2-RBI single to right field to give the Panthers the dominant lead.

The Golden Bears tacked on runs in the eighth and ninth innings as the Panthers secured the 10-5 victory, their ninth home win of the season.

After Mosley departed the game after five innings of work, Jonathan Bautista and Erubiel Candelario each pitched two innings while allowing just two runs over the final four innings in the home victory for the Panthers.

Pitt returns to action Wednesday night as they travel to Morgantown to take on West Virginia at 6:30 pm.
