CLEMSON, SC – Junior Emily Coughlin and Sophomore Ava Washington recorded hat tricks as Pitt dropped its final regular season game of 2023 to ACC foe No. 17 Clemson, 17-7, at Historic Riggs Field.
A slow first quarter made Thursday's game difficult once again for the Panthers, as they trailed 7-1 after fifteen minutes. Coughlin scored her first for the lone Pitt goal and Hannah Van Middelem stopped two Clemson shots.
Pitt showed fight in the second and third quarters, as both proved to be more back and forth than the first. This included a streak of three-straight Panther goals that stretched over the halftime break. Washington scored her first of the day, freshman Kara Trullender added the first of her career and Coughlin sent her second to the back of the net.
Clemson countered with the next three third quarter goals before Coughlin finished off her hat trick to make the score 13-5 Tigers. Pitt did close strongly, scoring the last two of the contest and leading to Washington's second hat trick in as many games.
Coughlin and junior defender Abby Thorne were scrappy all game with three and four ground balls a piece. Sophomore Jill Fenech led the way on the draw for the Panthers once again, this time with six in the game.
Three Tigers recorded hat tricks to pace the offense: Belle Martire (3G, 3A), Gianna New (3G) and Marina Miller (3G). In net, Emily Lamparter saved nine shots from Panther sticks.
Pitt will play in the first round of the 2023 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship, presented by Ally, next against an opponent to be determined after the conclusion of regular season ACC play.
