BLACKSBURG, VA – Camdyn O'Donnell scored twice and four other Panthers scored one goal a piece, but Pitt dropped Sunday's contest to seventh-seeded Virginia Tech 18-6 at Thomson Field in the first round of the 2023 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship.
The Panthers struck first within the initial two minutes of the game, but Virignia Tech scored the next nine to build their lead that would be maintained the entirety of the game.
The next Pitt goal, O'Donnell's second, would not be scored until less than four minutes remained in the second quarter. Junior Maureen McNierney put home her first of the season less than two minutes later, however the Panthers still found themselves down eight going into halftime (11-3).
Pitt continued to do their bast to battle, as Sydney Naylor and Emily Coughlin each scored in the third and Ava Washington in the fourth, but the first quarter lead built by the Hokies proved insurmountable.
Freshman goallie Molly Cain, making her first career start, did stop double digit Hokie shots as she finished with 10 saves on the day. Sophomore midfielder Jill Fenech continued her versatile play with three draw controls, one ground ball and two caused turnovers.
Virginia Tech was led by Ella Rishko (7G, 1A) and Olivia Vergano (4G, 1A) offensively and goalie Jocelyn Torres made eight saves to slow the Panther offense.
Sunday's loss marks the end of year two in the Pitt Lacrosse story. Follow the Panthers this offseason on Twitter and Instagram: @Pitt_WLAX.
