PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team (14-16) suffered a 9-4 loss to Youngstown State (7-24) Monday at Charles Cost Field.
The Penguins registered nine runs on 15 hits and two Pitt errors while limiting the Panthers to four runs on four hits.
The Panthers plated the game's first two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sky Duff was hit by a pitch to lead things off. Two outs later, Jack Anderson drew a walk to put two on for Pitt. Kyle Hess delivered an RBI single to center that scored Duff, then CJ Funk followed with a double to center that drove in Anderson.
Youngstown State flipped the script of the game, though, by scoring a total of seven runs over the fourth and fifth frames. The Penguins plated four runs on four hits and a Pitt error in the fourth, which included a two-run home run and a two-RBI double. The fifth inning saw Youngstown State score three runs on two hits and a Pitt error.
The Penguins added on to their total with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Pitt responded by scoring two runs in the home half to cut its deficit to five runs. Johnny Long III was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double play ball with the bases loaded, and Dom Popa coaxed a pinch-hit walk and later scored on a two-out, bases-loaded walk by Hess. Unfortunately for the Panthers, that's as close as they got.
Hess finished the game as Pitt's top hitter, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBI.
Pitt will look to bounce back on Tuesday as it travels to Kent State for a 6 p.m. contest at Olga A. Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.
