KENT, Ohio – Sky Duff hit his third home run of the 2023 season, but the Pitt baseball team (14-17) fell to Kent State (22-10), 5-2, Tuesday at Olga A. Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.
Kent State got on the scoreboard first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.
Pitt cut into its deficit courtesy of a leadoff home run to right in the top of the third by Duff.
The Golden Flashes added to their advantage in the fifth with another two-run homer.
Pitt made it a two-run game in the top of the eighth when Kyle Hess delivered a two-out RBI double to left, but Kent State added an insurance run in the home half with an RBI double.
Jayden Melendez led Pitt at the plate, accounting for two of the Panthers' six hits.
On the mound, Erubiel Candelario struck out seven in five innings of work for the Panthers. Dylan Simmons threw 1.1 innings of relief, then Nash Bryan tossed 1.2 frames. Both struck out two batters.
Pitt heads to Charlottesville, Va., this weekend to take on Virginia in an ACC series.
