Panthers Drop Two at Thundering Herd Round Robin

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Pitt slipped to 11-6 on the season after dropping two games during the final day of the Thundering Herd Round Robin, hosted by Marshall University, at Dot Hicks Field, Sunday.
The Panthers fell to Kent State, 6-3, and battled until the last out in a 4-3 walk-off loss to Marshall.
Pitt 3, Kent State 6
The Panthers and Golden Flashes were both scoreless through the first three innings as sophomore pitcher Adriana Romano took the start in the circle and allowed just two hits in that span.
The Golden Flashes struck first after Savannah Wing hit a bunt single in the top of the fourth, followed by a two-run home run from Emily Lippe to make the score 2-0. Kent State took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth off an RBI double from Bri Despines.
Pitt's bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Panthers scored three runs on five hits to even the score 3-3. Junior Cami Compson (1-for-1, R) led off the inning with a double, followed by senior Kayla Lane's (1-for-3, R) single to right field. Graduate student Yvonne Whaley (1-for-4, R, 2RBI) made the score 3-2 with a two-RBI double. Freshman Macy Hamilton (1-for-4, RBI) drove Whaley home with an RBI single to make the score 3-3.
The Panthers could not break the tie, as the Golden Flashes scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the 6-3 victory.

Graduate student Yvonne Whaley (1-for-3, 2 RBI) got Pitt on the board with a two-run double in the top of the second. The Panthers' maintained the lead for three innings behind a strong performance in the circle from redshirt-sophomore Dani Drogemuller.
Drogemuller retired all three batters in the second, third and fourth innings before giving up her first hit of the game in fifth. The Franfort, Ill., product finished with six strikeouts, three walks and four runs on six hits, over 6.2 innings.
Marshall gained momentum in the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff triple from Sydney Bickel. Bickel eventually scored on a wild pitch as two RBI doubles from Grace Cheleman and Camryn Michallas capped off the three-run inning for the Thundering Herd.
Bickel hit a two-out single in the bottom of the second, followed by a walk-off RBI double from Autumn Owen to end the game.

The Panthers will compete at the Memphis Tournament, hosted by the University of Memphis, March 10-12. Pitt opens play with a double header Friday against Indiana State (12 p.m.) and North Alabama (2:30 p.m.).
