DELAND, Fla. – The Pitt baseball team (6-5) rallied back from a two-run deficit in the top of the ninth inning but ultimately lost on a walk-off home run to Stetson (8-3), 6-5, on Saturday at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
Trailing 5-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning, Tommy Tavarez got Pitt's comeback started with a base hit to left field. Kyle Hess followed with a pinch-hit double to left center to put two runners in scoring position for the Panthers with nobody out. One out later, Sky Duff served up a sacrifice fly to center to allow Tavarez to tag up and score and make it a one-run game. CJ Funk then drew a walk, and Noah Martinez was issued an intentional walk to load up the bases with two outs for Jack Anderson. Anderson delivered by coaxing a bases-loaded walk to push across Hess and even the score at five-all.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, Cameron Hill ended the game by leading off the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off home run to left.
Pitt landed the game's first punch in the top of the first as Duff drew a leadoff walk and scored one out later on a double to left center by Martinez. The Hatters answered quickly though, taking the lead on three runs and two hits in the bottom of the frame.
Stetson added two more runs on two hits and a Pitt error in the second to extend its lead to 5-1.
The Panthers then closed the gap in the fifth. Tavarez led off with a base hit back up the middle to set the table for Johnny Long III to homer to left one out later, cutting Pitt's deficit to two runs. Long III's home run marked his first as a Panther.
Pitt's bullpen kept it a two-run game thanks to the work of Brady Devereux and Nash Bryan. Devereux struck out one in 3.1 scoreless innings of work while Bryan fanned four, giving Pitt a chance to stage its rally in the ninth.
Martinez led Pitt at the plate with a double and a single to go along with a walk. Tavarez collected a pair of singles and scored two runs.
Pitt will face Stetson again on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+.
