Pitt Baseball Falls at Penn State

The Nittany Lions took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Panthers answered in the top of the second and took the lead. Justin Acal led off the inning with an infield single to short, then scored on a single to center by Johnny Long III. Pitt loaded up the bases as Tommy Tavarez was hit by a pitch and Jack Anderson drew a walk. Kyle Hess singled home Long III to make it a one-run game. Noah Martinez and AJ Nessler then both drew bases-loaded walks to put Pitt in front, 4-3.
Penn State regained the lead by scoring two runs in the home half of the third, but Pitt knotted the score at five-all in the fifth as Nessler led off with a single back up the middle and later scored on an RBI ground out by Long III.
The Nittany Lions broke the stalemate in the sixth with a five-run frame to go up 10-5. Pitt cut the deficit to two runs in the eighth, though. Anderson and Martinez drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. One out later, CJ Funk doubled to left to score Anderson. Hess scored on an RBI ground out by Nessler, then Funk closed the gap to 10-8 when he scored on a Penn State error that allowed Acal to reach base.
Penn State answered Pitt's challenge, however, plating six runs in the home half of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Long III led Pitt at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort that included a pair of RBI.
Pitt heads to Durham, N.C., this weekend to continue ACC play with a three-game set at Duke.
