PITTSBURGH, PA – Pitt used a 5-2 second quarter scoring advantage to keep close to #10 Virginia, but was unable to fight back in the fourth in a 15-11 finish.
Virginia struck hard and fast in the opening quarter at Highmark Stadium, leading 5-2 afterwards. Mackenzie Hoeg secured a first quarter hat trick to lead the attack, while goals from Natalie Voorhees and Camdyn O'Donnell were all that kept the score from being lopsided. Voorhees, a sophomore defender, scored her first career goal by going end to end on a clear and finishing solo past the Cavaliers' goalie.
In the second, Pitt flipped the script and took the momentum with defensive stops and a 5-2 goal advantage of their own. This included back to back goals by Dylana Williams to end the half on a positive note for the Panthers.
The Cavaliers settled down in the second half and outscored the Panthers 8-4 to grab their third ACC win of 2023. In total, six Virginia players recorded at least three points, including six from Hoeg (5 G, 1 A) and Morgan Schwab (1 G, 5 A).
Three from Pitt scored two goals each: Molly Carter, Ava Washington and Williams. Goalie Hannah Van MIddelem once again made double digit saves (12).
The Panthers continue the home stretch with another Tuesday nonconference battle, this time with in-state foe Penn State. The afternoon contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at Highmark Stadium. As always, admission is free for all fans.
