LEADING OFF
- Pitt softball opens its 2023 season against Indiana and Prairie View A&M during the first day of the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic Tournament at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. against the Hoosiers and 4 p.m. against the Panthers.
- The weekend trip to the sunshine state is the first of six-straight trips on the road for the Panthers. In addition to Clearwater, the Panthers will travel to Miami, Fla.; Houston, Texas; Huntingdon, W. Va., and Memphis, Tenn. Pitt will open ACC play and conclude its road stint at Louisville, March 17-19.
- The Panthers return 15 of 21 players from their 2022 roster, including nine starters from last season. Pitt will bring back All-ACC graduate student Yvonne Whaley, redshirt sophomore Dani Drogemuller, graduate student Sarah Seamans, senior Kat Rodriguez and junior Cami Compson.
- Yvonne Whaley led the team last season in batting average (.344), hits (45), runs (21) and stolen bases (8), was second on the team in total bases (55) and on-base percentage (.387). In 131 at bats, Whaley struck out only 11 times, resulting in 92% of at bats with the ball in play.
- Redshirt sophomore Dani Drogemuller returns to the circle for the Panthers after totaling an 8-13 record with a 3.68 career ERA (89 er/169 ip) and 179 strikeouts.
- Drogemuller ended 2022 with 147 total strikeouts, the sixth highest in the ACC. She became the third pitcher since Pitt joined the ACC in 2013-14 to tally 100+ strikeouts in a single season.
- Sarah Seamans returns as the Panthers' primarily first baseman. Last season, she became the first player in program history to hit three career grand slams, hitting one against Bowling Green (3/11).
- After sitting out last season due to NCAA Transfer rules, Kat Rodriguez looks to impact the Pitt infield. Rodriguez came to Pittsburgh from Quinnipiac where she started in all 36 games in 2021 and earned All-MAAC Second Team honors.
- Cami Compson finished 2022 third on the squad with a .274 batting average, totaling 32 hits, 20 runs, 12 walks and 22 RBI. She hit a team-best seven homers, totaling 18 in her two years so far.
