Panthers Battle for Comeback Win Over Houston, Extend Win Streak to Four Games

Abby Edwards Hits Go-Ahead Home Run in First Career At-Bat
HOUSTON – Pitt extended its win streak to four games and improved to 10-3 overall this season after picking up two more wins at the University of Houston Tournament. The Panthers defeated Sam Houston, 5-1, and Houston, 4-3, Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Graduate student Sarah Seamans led the Panthers for the second straight day, going a combined 6-for-8 with two home runs, four RBI and two runs scored. Yvonne Whaley continues to have a strong return to the diamond, going a combined 5-for-8 with three RBI and a run scored.
Pitt 5, Sam Houston 1
The game was scoreless through four innings as the Panthers totaled just five hits in the opening frames. Sam Houston broke the scoreless tie with an Ellie Grill RBI single to left field. Sarah Seamans (4-for-4, R, 3 RBI, HR) evened the score at 1-1 with a solo opposite field home run to end the fifth.
Kendall Brown struck out three of her four batters faced in the top of the sixth, setting the tone for the Panthers' bats.
In her first career at-bat in the regular season, graduate student Abby Edwards got the four-run rally started by crushing a solo go-ahead home run to center field. The Panthers added insurance runs off another solo home run from senior Kayla Lane (1-for-3, R, RBI), and two RBI singles from graduate student Yvonne Whaley (3-for-4, R) and Seamans (4-for-4, R, 3 RBI) to make the score 5-1 heading into the top of the seventh.
Pitt finished with five runs on 10 hits and no errors, including scoring four runs on five hits in the sixth inning.
Sophomore transfer Adriana Romano started in the circle, allowing just one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk, over 4.0 innings. Brown (1-0) earned the win with four strikeouts in 2.0 shutout innings of relief.
Pitt 4, Houston 3
Pitt was held hitless through the first four innings, as Houston starting pitcher Kenna Wilkey retired 12 of 13 Panther batters faced. The Cougars held a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth before Whaley (2-for-4, 3 RBI) drove in two runs on a hard-hit single to center field.
The Panthers scored a run in each of the final innings. Seamans (2-for-4, HR R, RBI) hit her second home run of the day and fourth on the year to tie the game 3-3. Whaley drove in the final run on another single up the middle to give the Panthers a 4-3 edge heading into the final inning of play.
Redshirt-sophomore Dani Drogemuller improved to 4-2 on the season, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk in a 7.0 inning complete game outing.

- The Panthers extended their win streak to four games, marking the longest win streak of the season and the first four-game win streak since taking four straight games against North Carolina from April 16-18, 2021. Pitt looks to win five straight games for the first time since their six-game win streak from April 16-23, 2021.
- The Panthers scored a combined nine runs over the final three innings of play against Sam Houston and Houston … Pitt improved to 2-2 on the season when trailing after four innings.
- Sarah Seamans has hit four home runs this season, with three of her home runs tying the game. Seamans has reached base in each of the Panthers' 13 games this season.
- Yvonne Whaley has recorded a multi-hit effort in six of her seven games this season, including recording three or more hits three times. Whaley has also reached base in each of her seven games played.
