SARASOTA, Fla. -- Noah Martinez hit his first home run as a Panther, but the Pitt baseball team (1-2) ultimately lost an 8-5 decision to Maine (2-1) in the weekend series finale on Sunday at Ed Smith Stadium.
The Panthers wasted no time putting runs on the board as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Sky Duff led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Martinez, Jack Anderson and Tommy Tavarez then drew back-to-back-to-back walks, with the base on balls coaxed by Tavarez allowing Duff to score the game's first run. Martinez then scored to make it 2-0 on an RBI ground out by AJ Nessler.
The Black Bears answered in the top of the third, taking a 3-2 lead on a three-run home run by Connor Goodman. Maine's lead did not hold for long, though, as Martinez reached on a fielding error by the Black Bears with one out and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Nessler.
Maine retook the lead in the fifth as Quinn McDaniel hit a one-out single to left and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice that put Goodman on base. The Panthers knotted the score again, though, in the home half when Martinez unleashed a bomb to left center field for his first home run at Pitt.
The Black Bears jumped back in front in the sixth, taking a 6-4 lead. Dylan McNary drew a one-out walk, and Jake Rainess followed with a double down the left field line. One later, Goodman drove both in with a single to make it a two-run advantage for Maine.
Pitt cut it to a one-run game in the eighth as Anderson led off with a single and later scored on a double by Dom Popa.
Maine extended its lead, however, in the top of the ninth, pushing across two runs on a two-out, pinch-hit single to left by Nick White.
Pitt had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth after walks by Duff and Martinez, but Ryan Scott got two strikeouts to seal the win for Maine.
Duff turned in a multi-hit effort to lead the Panthers at the plate, posting a pair of singles.
In his first start on the mound as a Panther, graduate student right-hander Erubiel Candelario struck out five over 4.1 innings of work.
Pitt heads to Port Charlotte, Fla., to take on Harvard in a four-game series next weekend (Feb. 24-26).
