
Panthers Sweep Day 2 of FIU Panther Invitational

MIAMI – Pitt improved to 6-2 on the young season with wins over Butler and FIU on Day 2 of the FIU Panther Invitational. The Panthers posted a 9-1 win over the Bulldogs to open the day before closing the day with a 12-3 over host FIU.
The Panthers return to Felsberg Field tomorrow for their final game of the FIU Panther Invitational against Missouri at 9:30 a.m.
Game One vs. Butler
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Cate Lehner tripled to right center and came in to score on a Kaylee Gross bunt single to give Butler the 1-0 lead.
Pitt came roaring back in the bottom of the third inning as they were able to take control of the game with five runs in the frame. Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez (2-for-2, R) started the inning off with a single to third base and EC Taylor came in as a pinch runner and stole second base before Cami Compson earned a walk to give the Panthers two runners on. Kylie Griggs (1-for-3, 3 RBI, R) then stepped in and delivered a triple to center field that plated Taylor and Compson to give Pitt the 2-1 lead.
Kat Rodriguez (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 R) made it 3-1 in favor of Pitt in the third inning with a RBI single to left field. Rodiguez then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kayla Lane (1-for-1, 2 RBI) and Bailey Drapola (0-for-1, RBI, BB) plated Ana Hernandez (0-for-2, R, BB), who earned a walk, with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Pitt the 5-1 lead.
The Panthers put the game away in the fourth inning as they scored another four runs to push their lead out to 9-1. Sarah Seamans (1-for-2, R, BB) and Ramirez collected singles and Compson worked a walk to load the bases with no outs. Rodriguez stepped in and delivered a double to score Seamans and Ramirez to make it 7-1. Haylie Brunson pinch ran for Compson and she came around to score on a Kayla Lane RBI single to left field to make it 9-1 in favor of the Panthers.
Making her first start as a Panther, Julia Grobman (1-0) went 4.1 innings, allowing just one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Kendall Brown came in to get the final two outs to secure the 9-1 victory in five innings for the Panthers.
Game Two vs. FIU
After the FIU Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Pitt Panthers batted through the lineup en route to a six run first inning. Yvonne Whaley (4-4, 4 RBI) got the action started with a single. After back to back walks, the bases were loaded for Kylie Griggs (1-3, RBI) who drew a walk to bring in the first run. Kat Rodriguez (2-3, RBI) and Cami Compson (2-3, 2 RBI) both singled, scoring three, Hamilton (2-3, R) reached on an error, and Whaley came around to single for the second time of the inning to account for five more runs.
FIU added two runs in the top of the third, but Pitt once again responded in the bottom of the same inning with three additional runs. After two singles by Compson and Hamilton and a walk by Lane, Whaley cleared the bases with a huge double to left center. The Panthers added three more runs in the bottom of the 6th to bring the game to an end at 12-3.
This is the second win in as many days for Pitt against FIU. Pitt has outscored FIU 19-6 and outhit the Panthers 21-12.
Dani Drogemuller (2-2) earned the win for the Panthers. She allowed three runs on five hits, with six strikeouts through six innings of action to guide the Panthers to their second win of the day and third win of the weekend.
