
Women’s Soccer Places Program-Record 14 Student-Athletes on 2022 All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Pitt women's soccer team placed a program-record 14 student-athletes on the 2022 All-ACC Academic Women's Soccer Team, which was announced Wednesday by the league office.
Senior midfielder Anna Bout, sophomore midfielder Ellie Coffield, graduate student defender Hailey Davidson, freshman midfielder Fleming Dean, sophomore forward Mackenzie Evers, senior defender Ashton Gordon, senior goalkeeper Caitlyn Lazzarini, freshman defender Haylee Mersereau, senior midfielder Landy Mertz, senior forward Leah Pais, senior defender Athalie Palomo, sophomore forward Sarah Schupansy, junior midfielder Emily Yaple and freshman defender Katie Zailski represented the Panthers.
Palomo and Yaple both earned a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team for third time in their careers while Mertz and Schupansky received such honors for the second time.
The Panthers are coming off their most successful season in program history in 2022. Pitt overcame several key injuries throughout the season to set program records for overall wins (14) and ACC wins (5) and qualified for both the ACC Championship and NCAA Championship fields for the first time in program history. Pitt opened the year 6-0 to match the best start to a season in program history. The Panthers reached the Sweet Sixteen in their first NCAA Tournament appearance after knocking off Buffalo in the First Round, 1-0, and Georgetown in the Second Round, 2-1. The team set single-season program records for points (138) and goals (47). Pitt finished the season at No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches Rankings, with the Panthers earning a top-25 ranking in each of the final seven weeks of the organization's poll.
Bout, a Biological Sciences major, started all 22 games to set career highs in appearances and starts. She logged nine points to match her career high off of a goal and a career-high seven assists, which ranked second on the team.
Coffield, a Biological Sciences major, started all 22 games to set career highs in appearances and starts. She posted nine points to match her career high off of a career-high three goals and three assists. The Mars, Pa., native led the team with a career-high 1,870 minutes played.
Davidson, a Health Informatics major, started 20 of the 22 games she played in to set career highs in appearances and starts, logging a career-high 1,636 minutes.
Dean played in 16 games, totaling four points off of two goals in her rookie season.
Evers, a Natural Sciences major, appeared in a career-high 17 games. The Oakdale, Pa., native registered two points off a goal to match her career highs.
Gordon, a Media & Professional Communications major, started all 22 games to set career-highs in appearances and starts. She tallied a career-high five points off of a goal and a career-high three assists and ranked second on the team with a career-high 1,844 minutes played.
Lazzarini, a Finance major, started all 21 games she played in goal to set a career high in both appearances and starts. She registered a career-high 72 saves and posted the sixth-best save percentage in a single season in program history at .809. Her 0.88 goals allowed average ranks as the second-best in a single season in program history. Lazzarini broke the program record with 14 wins and logged seven shutouts to tie for the second most in a single season in program history.
Mersereau played in 12 games, totaling 227 minutes in her rookie campaign.
Mertz, a Rehabilitation Science major, was also named to the 2022 College Sports Communicators Division I Academic All-America Second Team, becoming the first Panther to garner Academic All-America status. She started all 22 games to set career-highs in appearances and starts. The Pittsburgh native set new career standards in points (17), goals (6), shots (59), shots on goal (36), game winning goals (4) and minutes (1685). She ranked third on the team in points and tied for third in both goals and assists (5). She garnered both United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's All-Atlantic Region Third Team and All-ACC Third Team honors.
Pais, a Psychology major, played in all 22 games to set a career high and made four starts. She led the team with a career-high eight goals and ranked third with a career-high five assists to rank second on the squad with a career-high 21 points.
Palomo, an Environmental Science major, started all 22 games to set career highs in appearances and starts. She ranked fourth on the team with a career-high 1,793 minutes played.
Schupansky, a Psychology major, played in all 22 games with 21 starts, setting career highs in both appearances and starts. She led the team with a career-high 22 points off of seven goals to match her career high and a team-high eight assists. The Pittsburgh native led the team with a career-high 62 shots.
Yaple, a Marketing major, played in 21 games with five starts, setting a career high in appearances. The Erie native totaled seven points off of two goals and a career-high three assists.
Zailski was named to both the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's All-Atlantic Region Second Team and the ACC All-Freshman Team. She played in all 22 games with 20 starts, tallying eight points off of four goals.
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.
