PITTSBURGH—Coming off its best dual win in a decade at No. 5 Ohio State last Sunday, the Pitt wrestling team travels to Nashville for a trio of contests during Monday's Collegiate National Duals.
Keith Gavin and the Panthers (6-1), who moved up to No. 13 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week after their bashing of the Buckeyes in Columbus, will face another pair of top-10 opponents during the prestigious dual competition hosted at Montgomery Bell Academy not far from Broadway in Nashville.
Pitt opens with No. 6 Iowa State (3-1) at 3 p.m. ET followed by a dual with No. 5 Cornell (1-0) at 5 p.m. The Panthers conclude Monday's wrestling with a contest against rising mid-major Little Rock (5-1).
The Panthers' lineup includes eight ranked wrestlers once again this week, including seven top-20 individuals in their respective weight classes, including ACC Wrestler of the Week Cole Matthews, who moved up to No. 15 in the InterMat rankings at 141 pounds.
No. 8 Holden Heller at 165 and No. 14 Reece Heller at 184 both face tough tests on Monday against individuals from Iowa State and Cornell ranked in the top 10 nationally, while No. 10 Dayton Pitzer will also have a chance to validate his ranking and continue his recent hot streak.
The Panthers and Cyclones last met last season in a thrilling 16-15 dual won by ISU on criteria. Incredibly, Pitt's dual with Cornell will be its first against the Big Red since 1971. The Panthers also will meet the Little Rock Trojans, who started their program just a few years ago, for the first time.
