NASHVILLE—In its final event of the year, the No. 13 Pitt wrestling team battled through a long day of wrestling action at the 2023 Collegiate Duals on Monday at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville.
The Panthers (7-3) went 1-2 on the day of duals, surviving a scare against Little Rock by winning 22-21 on the third criteria of match points. Pitt opened with a narrow 21-14 defeat to No. 6 Iowa State and followed that up with a 27-12 defeat to No. 5 Cornell.
"We came here for some really good competition, and that's what we got," Pitt coach Keith Gavin said. "We picked up a lot of quality feedback from this event. We had some good wins and a few guys wrestled well. We need to iron out consistency in a few other spots. Division I wrestling is very competitive right now, and we look forward to working to improve over the next few weeks."
Pitt picked up a pair of wins over individuals ranked in the top five nationally, with Reece Heller beating No. 5 Will Feldkamp of Iowa State by major decision at 184 pounds and Colton Camacho at 125 pounds defeating fifth-ranked Brett Unger of Cornell in a close bout.
Luca Augustine also went perfect for the Panthers at 174 pounds, defeating No. 15 Tyler Brennan of Little Rock, No. 22 MJ Gaitan of Iowa State and Benny Baker of Cornell in a trio of decisions.
Mac Stout and Dayton Pitzer had strong days as well at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively, winning twice each, chipping in with bonus points and helping Pitt recover from a 21-13 deficit against Little Rock.
