MEET NOTES
- The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's swimming and diving teams are back in action at the Minnesota Invite. The prestigious meet will begin Wednesday, Nov. 29 and will conclude Saturday, Dec. 2. Wednesday events begin at 6 p.m. while events held Thursday-Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. with swimming prelims and finals beginning at 6 p.m.
CSCAA RANKINGS
- The men's swimming and diving program are ranked No. 21 in the November edition of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll. The Panthers are one of eight teams in the ACC to earn a spot in the national rankings for November.
- The No. 21 spot marks the highest ranking for the Panthers since being ranked No. 16 in 2004, and the first time the Panthers have been included in the national poll since the 2020-21 season.
2024 TEAM USA OLYMPIC TRIALS
- Pitt heads into the Olympic year with four U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers and six other student-athletes within .80 or less of a trials qualifying time.
- The Panthers have two swimmers (Jerry Chen, 200 Breast; Claire Jansen, 100 Back) and two divers (Cameron Cash, Dylan Reed) meet the qualifying marks for the Olympic Trials.
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
- Marcin Goraj returns to Pittsburgh after claiming a bronze medal in the 100 Back (54.89) at the Polish Nationals and earned a silver medal at the World University Games for his prelims swim in the 400 Mixed Medley Relay.
- Sophie Yendell became a British National Champion in the 50 Fly (26.16) the second fastest Great Britain swimmer of all time in the 50 Fly and is currently ranked 49th in the world for 2023.
- Incoming freshman Michal Piela comes to Pittsburgh ranked at the top of the class of the 2023 in the 400 IM. The Oswiecim, Poland is four-time European Junior Champion and recently won the 400 IM (4:17.82) at the Polish National Championships in April. Piela ranks 58th in the world for 2023 in the event and comes in with best times of 1:58.54 (200 SCM IM) and 4:08.01 (400 SCM IM).
- Graduate transfer Max Matteazzi comes to Pitt for his final two years of eligibility after completing a degree for the University of Verona. Matteazzi ranked 57th in the world in the 200 IM (SCM) for 2022 and comes in with best times of 1:56.81 (200 IM, SCM), 4:11.73 (400 IM, SCM), 2:00.61 (200 IM, LCM) and 4:20.86 (400 IM, LCM).
ACC PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK
- Jerry Chen was named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week after winning four total events over two meets against Stanford and California, Oct. 13-14. Chen won the 100 and 200 Breast events in each meet and is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation in the 200 Breast (1:57.83) and No. 13 in the 100 Breast (54.03).
- Dylan Reed Earned ACC Men's Diver of the Week honors for his performance against Penn State and Notre Dame, Oct. 20-21. Reed won the 3-meter event with a total score of 412.95 and finished second overall in the 1-meter with his total of 365.20. The McLean, Va., native helped lead the Panthers to their 256.00 – 97.00 win over the Nittany Lions and a hard-fought loss the Fighting Irish. Pitt came up two points shy to No. 17 Notre Dame, 177.50 – 175.50, coming down to the last relay of the afternoon.
