Panthers Move onto the NCAA Second Round
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team (15-5-1, 6-3-1 ACC) left the Ohio State Buckeyes (9-8-2, 5-4-1 BIG 10) scoreless tonight in a 6-0 shutout at Ambrose Urbanic Field. This win secures the Pitt Panthers a spot in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. Tonight's victory solidified the Panthers' undefeated record at home and marked the most wins collected in a single season in Pitt's history.
Heading into the matchup, the Panthers were ready for it all. At just the 28th minute of play, freshman Deborah Abiodun put Pitt on the board first after a clean assist from Landy Mertz.
Just under two minutes later, Sarah Schupanksy heads the ball into the net after a rebound from the crossbar – doubling Pitt's lead. This was Schupanksy's 11th goal on the season.
The Panthers were not done collecting points in the first half as Mertz wanted to put her name on a goal herself. After a quick pass from Ellie Coffield, Mertz launches a wide cross from outside the box – finding the inside of the far post.
Pitt went into the locker room at the half up three goals to the Buckeyes zero. They were also dominating the box scores in shots (8-3), shots on goal (5-0) and had an overall possession of 58%.
Coming back for the final 45, the Panthers were ready to finish the First-Round dance.
Just under two minutes into the second half, Samiah Phiri made the score 4-0 after sinking the ball in into the net in her penalty kick.
At the 62nd minute, Pitt's all-time scoring leader, Amanda West, added her name to the stats sheet after heading the ball in from Mertz assist.
The Panthers posted their sixth and final goal of the night in just two minutes later with Coffield sinking the ball off of a double assist from Mertz and Schupansky. This was Mertz third assist – racking in five points on the evening.
Pitt finished the night off with 15-11 shots, 10-3 shots on goal, and a 56% overall possession.
