PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer (10-2-1, 3-1-1 ACC) team defeated the No. 22 Duke Blue Devils (5-4-2, 1-2-2 ACC) for the first time in program history Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field, 2-1.
The Panthers showed strong control of the pitch in the first 45 minutes, creating a number of scoring opportunities. Pitt was the first to place a shot on goal with Sarah Schupansky trying for the bottom left of the net, but Duke's goalie was there for the save.
Going into the locker room, the Panthers held the edge in shots (10-3), shots on goal (3-0), corner kicks (6-1), and overall possession (62%).
Coming back for the final 45 minutes of play, the Panthers were determined. Just over a minute and a half into the second half, Samiah Phiri posted a deep goal off of her left foot, putting Pitt on the board first.
Just moments later, Anna Bout slipped the second goal into the back of the net from a quick touch from Schupansky.
Duke was able to place their only goal on the board with a penalty kick by Kat Rader.
The Panthers defended their pitch to the end with a strong defensive back of Ashton Gordon, Ellie Coffield, Olivia Lee, Katie Zailski and Ellie Breech.
Pitt completed the night on top not just in goals. The Panthers outshot the Blue Devils 20-7, placed 8-1 shots on goal, secured 8-2 corner kicks and posted overall 57% of the possession.
