MEET NOTES
- The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's swimming and diving teams travel to the Bay Area this weekend to face two national powerhouse programs, meeting Stanford on Friday and California on Saturday.
- The weekend meets will mark the first time Pitt will swim against both Stanford and California in program history.
- The Pitt diving team will make begin their season against the Cardinal on Friday. Honorable Mention All-American and ACC bronze medalist Dylan Reed returns as a fifth-year for the Panthers.
- Freshman Sydney Gring had a strong outing in her collegiate debut in the Panthers' season opener against Army. Gring picked up three individual event wins the in 200 Free (2:05.38), 100 Free (57.73), and the 200 IM (2:21.91).
- Gring was also a member of the 400 Free Relay team that took first with a time of 3:56.65 and a member of the 200 Medley Relay team that came in second in the with a time of 1:58.00.
- Last season, Goraj set school records in the 200 Back (1:40.34), 200 Free (1:33.91) and was a member of the 400 Medley Relay team that earned honorable mention All-American honors with a time of 3:05.72.
- Senior Marcin Goraj won all five events he participated in during the Panthers' season-opener, including picking up three individual event wins. Goraj won the 200 Free (1:54.00), 200 Back (2:03.56) and the 100 Fly (55.68) while also being a member of the 200 Medley Relay team (1:42.89) and the 400 Free Relay team (3:26.41).
THE MATCHUP
- The Stanford Cardinal women's program finished third overall in the team standings at the 2022-23 NCAA Women's National Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. The Cardinal have won a total of 12 national titles and 25 Pac-12 Conference Championships, including winning the title in the past two seasons.
- The Stanford men's program has claimed a total of eight national titles and 64 Pac-12 conference championships. Last season, the Cardinal finished third overall in the conference championship and eighth overall at the 2022-23 Men's NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.
- The California men's team is the reigning back-to-back NCAA national champions and has won a total of eight NCAA team titles. The Golden Bears have won nine Pac-12 Championship team titles, including winning the title in four of the last five years.
- The Golden Bears' women's program has a total of four NCAA team championships and five Pac-12 team championships.
2024 TEAM USA OLYMPIC TRIALS
- Pitt heads into the Olympic year with four U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers and six other student-athletes within .80 or less of a trials qualifying time.
- The Panthers have two swimmers (Jerry Chen, 200 Breast; Claire Jansen, 100 Back) and two divers (Cameron Cash, Dylan Reed) meet the qualifying marks for the Olympic Trials.
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
- Marcin Goraj returns to Pittsburgh after claiming a bronze medal in the 100 Back (54.89) at the Polish Nationals and earned a silver medal at the World University Games for his prelims swim in the 400 Mixed Medley Relay.
- Sophie Yendell became a British National Champion in the 50 Fly (26.16) the second fastest Great Britain swimmer of all time in the 50 Fly and is currently ranked 49th in the world for 2023.
