Pitt Gymnastics Set to Open Season with Keystone Classic Meet

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team (0-0, 0-0 EAGL) will open its 2023 season hosting Penn, Penn State and Temple at 7 p.m. ET at the Fitzgerald Field House. Friday's meet will be the second annual Keystone Classic meet.

The Panthers will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah for their first road test of the season against Iowa, California and Oregon State at the Wasatch Classic, Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.

KEYSTONE CLASSIC
- Friday's meet against Penn, Penn State and Temple will be our first appearance at the second annual Keystone Classic meet. Do to COVID-19 protocols, the Panthers had to withdraw from last year's meet.
- To celebrate the home opener, the first 500 fans will receive a special Keystone Classic sticker.
- Join the in on the celebration for Camper Reunion Night and grab your $5 group rate tickets.
- Stick after the meet for post meet autographs with the Panthers.
RETURNING FOR THE PANTHERS
- Pitt returns 12 Panthers who competed in the 2022 season, including two who earned All-EAGL honors and two NCAA Regional Qualifiers. Overall, the Panthers completed the season with a NQS of 195.860, ranking 43 in the RoadtoNationals standings.
- Sophomore Hallie Copperwheat was named EAGL Gymnast of the Week for week five, EAGL Rookie of the Week for week two, and was first-team all-EAGL on bars (9.855), beam (9.870) and in the all around (39.235).
- Sidney Washington claimed EAGL Rookie of the Week three times during weeks three, eight and nine. Washington was first-team all-EAGL on vault (9.830), floor (9.860) and in the all around (38.935).
NEW PANTHERS
- Pitt welcomes seven new faces to the 2023 roster. Six traditional freshmen and one freshman mid-year enrollee.
- Freshmen Reyna Garvey finished 11th on floor in the 2022 level 10 nationals.
- Former Canadian National Team member, Lucia Jakab, won silver on vault in 2018 at Elite Canada.
- At the 2022 Texas State Championship, freshmen Natalia Pawlak scored a perfect 10 on bars and is a three-time level 10 national qualifier.
- Kennedy Duke graduated early from North Surrey Secondary School to join the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team and compete in the 2023 season. Duke was the 2022 Canadian National all around and vault champion.
SCOUTING PENN
- Penn completed the 2022 season with a NQS of 195.235, ranking 50 in the RoadtoNationals standings. The Quakers concluded with a 9-22, 6-1 record and placed first in the GEC.
- Friday will be the 4th meeting between the Panthers and the Quakers. Pitt currently holds a 3-0 lead over the Quakers.
SCOUTING PENN STATE
- Penn State finished the 2022 season ranking 40th in the RoadtoNationals standings with a NQS of 196.060. The Nittany Lions concluded with a 10-8, 2-7 record and placed tenth in the B1G 10.
- This will be the 46th time in program history meeting with Penn State, with the Nittany Lions owning a 43-2 all-time series edge against the Panthers.
SCOUTING TEMPLE
- Temple completed the 2022 season ranking 45th in the RoadtoNationals standings. The Owls concluded with a 17-12, 2-4 record and placed third in the EAGL.
- The last time we saw Temple was at the 2022 EAGL Championship where the Owls took third overall (196.025) with the Panthers placing eighth (193.575).
