PITTSBURGH—The Pitt wrestling team, ranked No. 25 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, hosts its final nonconference dual before the ACC campaign begins next weekend when Buffalo visits the Fitzgerald Field House for a Friday night 7 p.m. matchup on ACC Network Extra and the ESPN app.
The Panthers (5-2) beat the Bulls (6-7, 2-0 MAC) last season in Buffalo in a dual that came down to heavyweight and will aim for a more comfortable team victory this time around.
But the Mid-American Conference program, led by long-time head coach and alum John Stutzman, have emerged as one of the MAC's top teams in recent years and will look to play spoiler.
Keith Gavin's Pitt team features seven ranked wrestlers after a strong finish to 2022, including four guys ranked in the top-10 of their respective weight classes: No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds, No. 3 Cole Matthews at 141, No. 5 Dayton Pitzer at heavyweight and No. 8 Micky Phillippi at 133.
Speaking of Matthews, his high school alma mater Reynolds will meet Erie Cathedral Prep on Friday in a rare prep dual at Fitzgerald Field House. Action begins at 5 p.m. before the Pitt-Buffalo dual.
Fans can purchase one ticket and attend both wrestling matches this Friday on Pitt's campus.
Also ranked for the Panthers, No. 18 Reece Heller at 184 pounds, No. 29 Tyler Badgett at 149 and No. 30 Holden Heller at 165 will look for bounce-back wins after a frustrating Sunday against West Virginia.
The most intriguing match of Friday's dual might be Buffalo's top individual – No. 24 Michael Petite at 157 pounds – going against either Dazjon Casto or Dan Mancini of Pitt.
Colton Camacho at 125 pounds, Luca Augustine at 174 and Jake Slinger at heavyweight are also among Pitt's probables against Buffalo, who the Panthers own a 4-2 record against in the all-time series.
Fans can purchase tickets prior to arriving via PittsburghPanthers.com.
A linear broadcast of the 7 p.m. dual will also be streamed via ACC Network Extra on ESPN3.com and the ESPN app, with Jason Earle and Greg Warnock on the call.
