PITTSBURGH — The No. 25 Pitt wrestling team got back in the win column and gained the momentum it needed heading into the ACC schedule with a dominant 37-0 dual shutout over Buffalo.
The victory was Pitt's second shutout of the season after defeating Cleveland State 36-0 in the opener. It was the team's second largest win of the season – behind only a 42-3 victory at Brown.
"We wanted to show more energy and passion," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "We did that tonight. We have a bunch of guys that love to wrestle, so we need to show that on a consistent basis. It was a much better performance, which is easier to do coming off a disappointing loss. Now we need to build off this, handle success well and be ready for ACC duals the next few weeks."
The Panthers (6-2) jumped out to a fast start, winning bonus points in the first four matches of the dual.
Colton Camacho at 125 pounds and No. 3 Cole Matthews at 141 each won by technical fall and No. 8 Micky Phillippi at 133 and No. 29 Tyler Badgett at 149 secured major decisions to give Pitt an early 18-0 advantage over the visiting Bulls (6-8, 2-0 MAC) from the Mid-American Conference.
Matthews especially got a big ovation from the crowd full of Reynolds fans, who watched his high school alma mater earn a 41-24 dual victory over Erie Cathedral Prep at Fitzgerald Field House before Pitt's match.
Dazjon Casto returned to Pitt's lineup at 157 pounds and earned a 1-0 win. Also taking decisions for the Panthers were No. 30 Holden Heller at 165, Luca Augustine at 174, Reece Heller at 184 over ranked opponent Giuseppe Hoose and Jake Slinger at heavyweight.
Pitt's fifth and final bonus-point win came via No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds thanks to his takedown clinic and four nearfall points to win 13-3.
